Google Remarketing

Google Remarketing is a fairly new internet marketing strategy that Google has been offering through their Adwords platform for less than a year now. Remarketing is not a new concept as this ad serving technology has been around for years and offered on other ad serving networks.  Personally speaking, I’ve implemented this strategy for various clients through Yahoo and the Right Media exchange network, which they refer to as Behaviorial Targeting.

What makes Google’s offering unique is that there is a low cost of entry and this technology is now available to internet marketers and advertising companies through the Adwords platform and opens the door to offer remarketing or behaviorial advertising opportunities to prospects browsing the Google Display Network.  Yahoo and other major ad serving networks required a minimum of $20,000 per month which could be considered a hefty budget for some small businesses.

Google lists 10 of its favorite Adwords innovations of 2010

SEO and Search Engine Marketing have come along way in 2010.  Google reflects on its 10 favorite Adwords innovations of 2010.  While it’s difficult to single out any of the SEM tactics, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on a few.

Google Product Ads – While Google Product Listing Ads is in beta and only available to a select group of merchants, any Adwords advertiser can take advantage of the Google product extensions.  What are product extensions?

Product extensions allow you to use your existing Google Merchant Center account to highlight your products directly in your search ads (and Google Images ads when opted into the Search Network). Product extensions will not appear on other Search Network sites, or on Display Network sites.

When your AdWords ad appears and your Google Merchant Center account contains a product that is relevant to the searcher’s query, product extensions may show the images, titles, and prices of your closest matching products with your ad. Your product offerings may be shown in a “plusbox” ad. When a user clicks a product image, they will be taken to the destination page listed for that product in your Merchant Center account.  If your business is interested in learning how to take advantage of google product extensions, then feel free to contact me.

Click-to-call Phone Extensions – With local seo and mobile marketing on the rise, this is a really neat new feature.  Say you are searching for a florist and your mobile browser returns the florists that are closest to you in proximity.  By having a click-to-call Phone Extension, you are able to click on the phone number without visiting the website and you place your order by phone.  Easy process and user experience and you make your significant other or mother extremely happy.

Remarketing – Really glad to see Google is now offering this product.  Many Ad Networks have been offering this for some time.  I’ve heard this referred to as behavioral targeting and basically Google drops a cookie on a search user’s browser when they visit your website after a search.  You may have searched for a florist and then clicked through and visited “abc florist company”.  You exit the site without making a purchase.  Now if you visit any other site within the Google content network, “abc florist company” has the ability to serve display ads in your browser on google content affiliated sites.  This is a really effective search engine marketing tactic when using display ads and geo-targeting.
